Food You'll Actually Want To Eat In A College Dining Hall

Everyone knows the timeless fact that college food is disgusting. But, with a little bit of creativity, it doesn't always have to be! Over Freshman and Sophomore year, I tried to document things that I ate that really tasted good, and wasn't your "average" college dorm food. This is food that I eat, food that I love, and food that isn't just chicken fingers and ramen 24/7. I hope you enjoy, and maybe you'll leave this post with an itch to make something tasty in your dining hall!

Egg, Cheese + Spinach Bagel

This one is very simple & easy for in the morning when you're in a rush. All you need to do is ask for an egg sunny side up, some cheese & some spinach. It is super good & tastes just like something you could get in a cafe.

Egg + Avocado Toast

Most dining halls give you the option of cooking something on the grill. My dining hall has eggs available in the morning and burgers and steak and other "lunch" type of foods for the evenings. All you have to do is ask for one egg sunny side up ( this is how you get that beautifully runny yolk that tastes so good). Then take a slice of whole grain toast ( or whatever kind of bread you want, English muffins are great with this too) and toast it yourself. Most dining halls also have toasters readily available for students to use. Then ask for a side of avocado and spread it onto your crispy toast. Ask the chef to put the egg on top of the bread and avocado, add some salt n pepper, and voila! You just made something that most brunch places offer, in your dining hall!

Banana Nut Cereal

Another really simple yet so tasty recipe. For me, the hardest part is finding almond milk in the dining hall. What I have to do is buy a little one serving carton of almond milk and squeeze it into my bowl through the hole that the straw goes through. It's very strange, I know but it works & tastes super duper delicious.

Blueberry + Brown Sugar Oatmeal

This recipe is one of my absolute favorites. All you have to do is get some oatmeal from the dining hall ( mostly in the early morning hours) put some fresh blueberries from the salad bar, and add either honey or syrup. It tastes super delicious and is really nice in the Winter months when you want a hot and cozy breakfast.

Salad Bar

This may seem like a given, but I am surprised at how many people don’t do this! One, it costs far less than buying one of the pre-made salads on campus, since they charge you by weight! Two, you can pick and choose exactly what you want from the salad bar, so you are only paying for exactly what you want. This is a big deal for me because a lot of the salads have either tomato or onion included in them, which I hate!

Grilled Chicken Sandwich

This is my go to dinner meal in the Winter. All that is in it is grilled chicken, pickles, cheese, and lettuce. It is so yummy & the fact that it is grilled like a panini makes it tastes so much better than a regular sandwhich.

Gouda and Avocado Turkey Burger

This my absolute favorite, my Sodexo Holy Grail. ( Also the vegan black bean burger is very very yummy!)
